This harpist is in
demand to play harps for people's special days, and
functions. She has been playing harps at weddings and
other events since 1993, at venues from hotels and
restaurants to English Heritage castles and the Tower of
London. She now mostly uses her elegant antique gilded
pedal harp, but alternatively sometimes plays her smaller celtic harp, or her stunning blue electro-harp.
She has an extensive repertoire of light classical,
jazz standards and popular music, and also has a large
repertoire of traditional music from around the British
Isles, and of medieval and other early music. She can
sing at wedding ceremonies when requested. She enjoys
helping people choose the music they want for their
occasion. It is often possible for her to add a new piece
or two to her repertoire for an occasion. She will
include more of particular styles to suit individual
preferences, emphasising the classical or popular side of
her repertoire, or playing mainly traditional music on her celtic harp, for example for a family with Irish or
Scottish connections.
She combines a career in performance with work as a
music therapist, having a post-graduate diploma in music
therapy, and being state registered with the HPC.
Starting to play the piano at 8 years of age, she went on
to include music in her studies at Leeds University. She
has played the harp for over 20 years, studying celtic
harp with many of the UK's and Ireland's top celtic
harpers, and classical harp with Rowena Bass, Eira Lyn
Jones and Eleanor Turner.
Music therapy training requires a high formal and
practical standard of playing and musicianship – her piano
skills needed to be at diploma level to enter the course.
The training further
developed She’s
musicianship - she is equally happy playing harp from
music or by ear, and often makes her own arrangements.
She is also able to
improvise and make
spontaneous variations
when appropriate, fitting
the music to
the timing of the occasion,
and often getting positive
feedback from clients, their guests and registrars when
she does this. |
