Katie is a harpist, pianist and flautist
from the Scottish Borders. She has been
performing professionally for over two years and recently
achieved distinction, the highest category, in her Grade 8
lever harp exam, as well as Grade 7 distinctions for flute
and piano.
Katie has so far performed publicly only on
her clarsach (which she named Bradley), but she was
delighted to win a sum of money from the Dewar Arts Award
foundation earlier in 2007 to put towards the purchase of
a new lever harp (which she plans to name Angelina).
Scottish Borders harp maker Mark Norris is designing and
building the new harp, which will hopefully be pink – and
sparkly.
Thanks to her inspirational teacher,
Savourna Stevenson, Katie’s repertoire covers a wide range
of classical, contemporary, folk and world music, as well
as several of Katie’s own compositions. Katie recently
worked with a guitarist friend to put together a CD of
harp and guitar duets, Mist Over Glencoe, which
featured their own compositions and arrangements of
traditional tunes. Katie also recorded a CD of solo harp
pieces, Seagulls, which is available as a
promotional demo.
Katie is 17 and currently in her final year
at school. She hopes to take a gap year to further her
musical experience before deciding on a university course
– her options at the moment include law and history, and
she is considering studying music abroad. |
